strokeWomen who drink a daily cup of coffee achieve an additional benefit would be less risk of stroke, according to a study by Swedish researchers.

Women who consumed at least a daily cup of coffee has between 22 and 25% less likely to suffer a stroke compared with those who drink it sparingly or not, the statement said.

“The coffee drinkers should feel joyous,” said Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

“Coffee is often presented as potentially bad for the heart, but in truth no studies exist that convincingly asserts that it is harmful,” said Hayes. “Those who drink coffee may be doing some good, and possibly no harm.”

However, Hayes and other experts say that the study should not encourage women who do not consume the drink go running to the cafeteria that will be closer.

The study shows that coffee does not reduce the risk of stroke, only women who use it tend to have a lower risk of autism.

“This type of epidemiological studies are convincing but do not show the existence of a cause,” said David S. Seres, director of medical nutrition at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York.

The study’s findings were released online this week in the journal Stroke (stroke) of the American Heart Association. The researchers who led Sweden to Susanna Larsson at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, said there were conclusions found in previous studies on coffee consumption and stroke.

Studies on coffee consumption “do not show a consistent conclusion,” said director Cathy Sila, a neurologist for stroke in the Case Medical Center University Hospital in Cleveland.

In the Swedish study, researchers looked for a decade to 34,670 Swedish women between 49 and 83 years. At baseline women were asked how much coffee they took. Investigators later checked the medical records to ascertain the number who had strokes.

A total of 1,680 women had the problem, of which 205 took less than a cup of coffee or nothing at all. Larsson and other experts said they did not smoke, pressure checked and maintained at a healthy weight alternatives are proven to prevent stroke, and they should be used mainly.
